Brevard County Public Defender Election Candidate Attends Trayvon Martin Forum in Cocoa, Florida

Written by: Ken Rhoden, April 1, 2012

The Greater St. Paul Baptist Church in Cocoa hosted a forum for Sheriff and State Attorney candidates to discuss the Trayvon Martin case. The focus was on the future and the lessons learned from this tragic situation. The church was filled and I was glad to have a front row seat for the discussion. All candidates agreed there needs to be better communication and stronger relationships between elected officials and the community they serve.

When I began my campaign in April of 2011 I posted on my web page as part of my platform the following paragraph:

“The Public Defender should be a community leader and not just an agency head. The office is a powerful platform that should be used to talk to school children, civic groups, and churches. Prevention is key and the Public Defender is ideally positioned to help attack the terrible trinity of drugs, violence, and crime. I will serve the public and be an active, energetic Public Defender.”  (from KenRhoden.com “Reform is Needed” page)

The Trayvon Martin tragedy and the community’s response highlight just how much work needs to be done.

The event today (April 1, 2012) was well run and the candidates each had equal opportunity to answer questions. I thank the organizers of the forum for their hard work and hope they bring us future events.

Brevard Superhero 5k Benefitting the Guardian Ad Litem Program

The Brevard County Guardian Ad Litem program hosted a fundraiser Superhero 5k run/walk today, February 4, 2012.  The event was held at Space Coast Stadium and was well attended (just see the crowds in the photos!)

Ken ran in the 5k to support this worthy cause and run he did.  No wonder he’s been called Rocket Rhoden!  He placed first in his age group with a solid 8:08 per mile pace.  But as always, Ken directed attention to the real reason for the event,  “The kids are the ones that need to win and supporting local fundraisers like the Superhero 5k is one way that all of us can help.  Run or walk,  donate time or door prizes,  there is something we all can do,” said Ken.

If you are interested in learning more about the Guardian Ad Litem program, visit them online to read about the organization. Or if you think you’d like to be a Guardian Ad Litem, please contact the wonderful staff:

A Runner Running for Office

The Space Coast Runners newsletter for January 2012 is out.   And featured are Ken, his fiance’, and dog in the monthly Run a Mile With profile article.   There are three pages of information about all three running habits along with some interesting tidbits about their likes and plans.  You can view the newsletter using this link to the SCR Newsletter and Adobe Reader or view the gallery posted below.   If you are interested in running with the club or joining, please visit their site at www.spacecoastrunners.org or ask Ken when you see him!

Visiting Tallahassee

Last week Ken spent a few days in Tallahassee and it was a great trip.   Visiting the capitol building is always a good experience and meeting some new and old friends was very nice.  A side trip to Ken’s alma mater, Florida State University College of Law brought back memories.   Florida Tax Watch is housed in a beautiful old church and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The offices are fully renovated inside however the bones of the church are preserved and it was an amazing location for a meeting.

Ken Walks the Titusville Christmas Light Parade

The energetic, hardworking Ken Rhoden is at it again!  Ken walked the entire route of the Titusville Christmas Light Parade (put on by the local Jaycees) along with a few of his supporters!   The crowd was HUGE the whole way and it even “snowed” a little in Titusville as the parade passed through the judging area.  Little Miss Mullet Maiden rode on the campaign car and threw candy out to all the kids.  Walkers passed out candy canes and Ken shook every hand extended to him for 2.4 miles and that was a lot of hands.  A volunteer from Barry University School of Law came over from Orlando to drive the car and a big thank you to Matt, Tracy, Michelle, Bo, Carol, Bonnie, Amy & her sons, and Isabella.
